Filling Out an Accident Report

The accident report is a simple yet extremely important tool for documenting a road accident. It allows you to describe the event and record essential information such as:

  • The names and addresses of the drivers involved

  • Their license numbers

  • Their vehicle registration numbers

  • Their insurance details

This document plays a key role in recording the circumstances of the accident, helping your insurance company assess your liability and determine any potential compensation.

Contacting Emergency Services in Case of Injuries

If the accident has not resulted in any injuries, the intervention of law enforcement is not necessary. However, in the event of injuries, even minor ones, to one or more people, it is crucial to immediately notify emergency services. The police will then draft an accident report that will be sent to the Quebec Automobile Insurance Corporation (SAAQ).

If you have hit an animal, it is required to report it to the authorities in certain circumstances, whether the animal is domestic or wild. You are specifically required to report any animal over 25 kg to the nearest police station to avoid a $300 fine and a loss of 9 demerit points.

Furthermore, if you collide with a wild turkey, a bird of prey, a moose, a deer, a coyote, or any other animal on the mandatory reporting list, regardless of their weight, it is necessary to contact a wildlife protection officer.

Contacting Your Insurer

Following a traffic accident, it is crucial to contact your insurer quickly, whether you plan to make a claim or not. It is important to inform them of the details of the incident.

Your insurer will assess the damage to your vehicle to determine the potential compensation amount. Remember, your insurance company's approval is essential before proceeding with repairs.
